what is a tattoo

The word "Tattoo" is derived from a Dutch expression "doe-den-tap-toe" meaning "turn off the taps". A military routine involving a sergeant and a drummer, marching through a town, signaled the tavern keepers to close their taps and the soldiers to return to their billets. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the drill and duties carried out to close down the barracks for the night, such as changing of the guard, lowering the flag at sunset, posting the sentries, sounding last post and lights out, gradually became a show-piece. Local dignitaries were invited to watch the ceremony. Over the years it has expanded into the modern Tattoo which is a fast-paced, colourful show of military music, pageantry, historical re-enactments, dancers, gymnastic displays and more.
